Có thể nói mấu chốt để đạt điểm cao trong đề thi TOEIC đó là từ vựng. Thường thì khi luyện thi TOEIC, các bạn sẽ phải học ôn từ vựng thuộc khoảng 13, 14 chủ đề khác nhau, sau đó là học các từ dễ gây nhầm lẫn để tránh chọn sai đáp án. Vậy thì hôm nay chúng ta cùng tìm hiểu một số cặp từ rất dễ bị nhầm nếu không để ý nhé!
1. BESIDE / BESIDES
- Beside: giới từ, mang nghĩa bên cạnh, = ‘'next to’', '’at the side of'’
Examples:
- I sit beside John in class.
- Could you get me that book? It's beside the lamp.
- Besides: (adverb) meaning '’also'’, '’as well'’
: (preposition) meaning '’in addition to'’
Examples:
- (adverb) He's responsible for sales, and a lot more besides.
- (preposition) Besides tennis, I play soccer and basketball.
2. CLOTHES / CLOTHS
- Clothes (số nhiều) quần áo chúng ta mặc nói chung
Examples:
- Just a moment, let me change my clothes.
- Tommy, get your clothes on!
- Cloth: vải vóc nói chung (không đếm được)
- Cloth (số nhiều là cloths): miếng vải, tấm vải, thường dùng để lau hay làm khăn trải bàn…
Examples:
- There are some cloths in the closet. Use those to clean the kitchen.
- I have a few pieces of cloth that I use.
- clothing (không đếm được): nói đến một loại quần áo đặc biệt, cụ thể nào đó
Examples:
- Protective clothing
3. DEAD / DIED
- Dead: adjective meaning ‘'not alive'’, chết
Examples:
- Unfortunately, our dog has been dead for a few months.
- Don't touch that bird. It's dead.
- Died: past tense and past participle of the verb '’to die’', thì quá khứ và phân từ hai của động từ "die"
Examples:
- His grandfather died two years ago.
- A number of people have died in the accident.
4. EXPERIENCE / EXPERIMENT
- Experience (đếm được): kỷ niệm
- experience (ko đếm được): kinh nghiệm
Examples:
- (first meaning)His experiences in Germany were rather depressing.
- (second meaning) I'm afraid I don't have much sales experience.
- Experiment: thí nghiệm, thử nghiệm
Examples:
- They did a number of experiments last week.
- Don't worry it's just an experiment. I'm not going to keep my beard.
5. FELT / FELL
- Felt: past tense and past participle of the verb '’to feel'’, quá khứ và phân từ hai của động từ "Feel"
Examples:
- I felt better after I had a good dinner.
- He hasn't felt this well for a long time.
- Fell: past tense of the verb ‘’to fall'’, quá khứ của động từ "fall"
Examples:
- He fell from a tree and broke his leg.
- Unfortunately, I fell down and hurt myself.
6. FEMALE / FEMININE
- Female (adj, n) giới tính nữ, cái
Examples:
- The female of the species is very aggressive.
- The question 'female or male' means 'are you a woman or a man'.
- Feminine (adj) mang đặc điểm của nữ giới, nữ tính
Examples:
- He's an excellent boss with a feminine intuition.
- The house was decorated in a very feminine manner.
7. ITS / IT’S
- Its: possessive determiner similar to '’my'’ or '’your'’, tính từ sở hữu
Examples:
- Its color is red.
- The dog didn't eat all of its food.
- It's: Short form of ‘'it is’' or '’it has'’, dạng viết tắt của "It is" hoặc "It has"
Examples:
- (it is) It's difficult to understand him.
- (it has) It's been a long time since I had a beer.
8. LAST / LASTEST
- Last: adjective usually meaning '’final'’, cuối cùng
Examples:
- I took the last train to Memphis.
- This is the last test of the semester!
- Latest: adjective meaning '’most recent'’ or '’new'’, gần đây nhất, mới nhất
Examples:
- His latest book is excellent.
- Have you seen his latest painting?
9. MALE / MASCULINE
- Male: the sex of a man or animal, giới tính nam
Examples:
- The male of the species is very lazy.
- The question 'female or male' means '’are you a woman or a man'’.
- Masculine: adjective describing a quality or type of behaviour that is considered typical for a man, nam tính
Examples:
- She's a very masculine woman.
- His opinions are just too masculine for me.
10. PRICE / PRIZE
- Price /prais/: noun - what you pay for something, giá cả
Examples:
- The price was very cheap.
- What's the price of this book?
- Prize /praiz/: noun - an award, giải thưởng
Examples:
- He won a prize as best actor.
- Have you ever won a prize in a competition?
11. SENSIBLE / SENSITIVE
- Sensible (adj) khôn ngoan
Examples:
- I wish you would be more sensible about things.
- I'm afraid you aren't being very sensible.
- Sensitive (adj) nhạy cảm, sâu sắc hoặc dễ bị tổn thương
Examples:
- You should be careful with David. He's very sensitive.
- Mary is a very sensitive woman.
12. SOME TIME / SOMETIMES
- Some time: refers to an indefinite time in the future, một lúc nào đó, khi nào đó
Examples:
- Let's meet for coffee some time.
- I don't know when I'll do it - but I will do it some time.
- Sometimes: adverb of frequency meaning ‘'occasionally'’, thỉnh thoảng
Examples:
- He sometimes works late.
- Sometimes, I like eating Chinese food.
13. ACQUIRE / INQUIRE
- Acquire (v): đat được, giành được
Examples:
- she seems to have acquired an additional copy of the book.
- Inquire (v): hỏi về điều gì
Examples:
- she called to inquire about the project's deadline.
14. ACCESS / ASSESS
- Access (v): truy cập
Examples:
- It's getting harder to access the area due to policy changes.
- Assess (v): định giá, đánh giá
Examples:
- The insurance agent came to assess the property.
14. CONTRIBUTE / ATRIBUTE
- Contribute (v): đóng góp
Examples:
- They were praised for contributing a generous donation to the city.
- Attribute (v): được cho là

15. CONCLUDE / INCLUDE
- Conclude (v): kết luận
Examples:
- He concluded the talk by reminding the staff of their responsibilities.
- Include (v): bao gồm
Examples:
- Accomodations were included in the package.
16. EFFECT / AFFECT
- Effect (n): ảnh hưởng
Examples:
- The change caused an immediate effect to the residents.
- Affect (v): tác động
Examples:
- Both houses were badly affected by the fire.
17. COMPLEMENT / COMPLIMENT
- Complement (n): sự bổ sung
Examples:
- The budget acts as an complement to the final report.
- Compliment (n): lời khen
Examples:
- They received compliemnts for their heroic action.
18. FORMERLY / FORMALLY
- Formerly (adv): trước đó
Examples:
- He was formerly the Chief Executive Officer of the company.
- Formally (adv): chỉnh tề, trang trọng
Examples:
- All participants for the banquet are requied to dress formally.
19. CONSIDERABLE / CONSIDERATE
- Considerable (adj): lớn, đáng kể
Examples:
- Experts predict that the project will consume a considerable amount of money.
- Considerate (adj): ân cần, chu đáo
Examples:
- It wasn't very considerate of him to eat all the cupcakes.
20. INITIATIVE / INITIAL
- Initiative (n): sáng kiến, đề xuất
Examples:
- The merger initiative was dicussed in last week's meeting.
- Initial (adj): ban đầu
Examples:
- The initial report stated that the decrease in sales was caused by the change in consumers' behavior.
21. AS OF / AS TO
- Ass of: kể từ
Examples:
- As of today, new poliies on dress code will be implemented.
- As to: về điều gì
Examples:
- He was uncertain as to which shirt to buy.
