So sánh hơn (Comparative) trong Tiếng Anh

I. CÔNG THỨC VÀ KHÁI NIỆM SO SÁNH HƠN

1. Khái niệm

So sánh hơn được hiểu là cấu trúc so sánh giữa 2 hay nhiều vật/người với nhau về 1 hay 1 vài tiêu chí, trong số có 1 vật đạt được tiêu chí được đưa ra cao nhất so với các vật còn lại.

So sánh hơn thường được sử dụng cho việc so sánh 2 hay nhiều vật/người với nhau (với những trường hợp so sánh 1 vật với tổng thể ta dùng so sánh nhất).

2. Cấu trúc so sánh hơn

So sánh hơn với tính từ ngắn và trạng từ ngắn

Cấu trúc:

S1 + S-adj + er/ S-adv- er + than + S2 + Axiliary V

S1 + S-adj + er/ S-adv- er + than + O/ N/ Pronoun

Trong đó:

S-adj-er: là tính từ được thêm đuôi “er”
S-adv-er: là trạng từ được thêm đuôi “er”
S1: Chủ ngữ 1 (Đối tượng được so sánh)
S2: Chủ ngữ 2 (Đối tượng dùng để so sánh với đối tượng 1)
Axiliary V: trợ động từ
(object): tân ngữ
N (noun): danh từ
Pronoun: đại từ

Ví dụ:

- This book is thicker than that one.

- They work harder than I do. = They work harder than me.

So sánh hơn trong tiếng anh

So sánh hơn với tính từ dài và trạng từ dài

Cấu trúc:

S1 + more + L-adj/ L-adv + than + S2 + Axiliary V

S1 + more + L-adj/ L-adv + than + O/ N/ Pronoun

Trong đó:

L-adj: tính từ dài.
L-adv: trạng từ dài.

Ví dụ:

- He is more intelligent than I am = He is more intelligent than me.

- My friend did the test more carefully than I did = My friend did the test more carefully than me.

Lưu ý:

So sánh hơn được nhấn mạnh bằng cách thêm much hoặc far trước hình thức so sánh

Ví dụ: My house is far more expensive than hers.

3. Chú ý khi so sánh hơn

Short adj (Tính từ ngắn)

– Với tính từ có 1 âm tiết: long, short, tall,…

=> Nếu từ đó kết thúc bằng nguyên âm + phụ âm thì gấp đôi phụ âm.

Ví dụ: Big => bigger; hot => hotter.

– Với tính từ có 2 âm tiết kết thúc bằng: y, et, ow, er, le, ure như: narrow, simple, quiet, polite. (ngoại lệ là guilty, eager dùng với most vì là tính từ dài).

=> Nếu từ đó kết thúc bằng phụ âm y –> ta đổi y thành i.

Ví dụ: Happy => happier; dry => drier.

– Now they are happier than they were before. (Bây giờ họ hạnh phúc hơn trước kia).

Ta thấy “happy” là một tính từ có 2 âm tiết nhưng khi sử dụng so sánh hơn, ta sử dụng cấu trúc so sánh hơn của tính từ ngắn.

+ Một số tính từ và trạng từ biến đổi đặc biệt khi sử dụng so sánh hơn và so sánh hơn nhất.

Long adj (Tính từ dài)

Là tính từ có nhiều hơn một âm tiết (trừ trường hợp 2 âm tiết của short adj) như: precious (quý báu), difficult (khó khăn), beautiful (xinh đẹp), important (quan trọng),…
