II. VOCABULARY

Abroad (adj) ở nước ngoài
He left his country at the age of 30 when he got a job abroad.

Trip (n) một chuyến đi (ngắn) (rồi lại quay về nhà)
Tom is on a business trip in France, he won’t be back until Saturday.

Service (n) dịch vụ
I visit this hotel quite often, because it has a very professional service.

travel agency (n) công ty lữ hành
I seldom visit travel agencies. It is cheaper for me to arrange holidays on my own.

Favourite (adj) ưa thích
My favourite colour is green.

means of transport: phương tiện giao thông (by car, ship, plane, train, bus, ferry, bike, etc.)
Plane is the fastest but still the most expensive means of transport.

ferry (n) phà
They are going to build a bridge to the island, but now you can get there by ferry only.

Seasick (adj) say sóng
feeling sick because of the movement of the ship
If it is not necessary to travel by ship, I simply don’t. I always feel seasick immediately after the ship sets off.

Board (adj) đang ở trên tàu, thuyền, máy bay
on a boat, train or plane
As soon as we were on board, the plane took off.

Board (v) lên tàu, thuyền, máy bay
After boarding the boat, we will have a small party.

driver’s license (n) bằng lái xe
He had to pay an extremely high fine for driving without his driver’s license.

I simply cannot travel by plane, because I am afraid of heights and I immediately get sick.

I’m not satisfied with the airline. There was a 50 minute delay and the return flight was cancelled.

We were given a lot of free time in Madrid to go shopping or sightseeing.

seaside (n) bờ biển
Her husband hates lying on the beach in the heat. He always objects to spending his holidays at the seaside.

experience (v) trải qua
They’ve never experienced a greater loss since the death of their brother.

hostility (n) thái độ không thân thiện, ko hiếu khách, thù địch
I’ve never experienced any hostility from my co-workers. I get on with them very well.

cuisine (n) ẩm thực, cách nấu nướng (của một nước, một vùng nào đó)
I love Japanese cuisine, especially sushi.
unusual (adj) không bình thường, khác thường, thường là thú vị
Women taking up high positions in companies are not as unusual as in the past.

journey (n) cuộc hành trình, chuyến đi (từ nơi này đến nơi khác)
It’s just a two hour plane journey from here to Paris.

voyage (n) chuyến đi (dài) thường đi bằng tàu biển
Although her father is a sailor, she’s never been on a voyage with him.

III. IDIOMS ON TRAVELLING

Travel broadens the mind.

I’ve never learnt more about history and cultures than during my last three years in Latin America. It is true that travel broadens the mind.

off the beaten track ~ (một nơi) không nổi tiếng lắm, không đông đúc lắm
His travel destinations are always off the beaten track. He enjoys exploring new places where he could rest far from the noise of big cities.

There is no place like home.
Không đâu như ở nhà.
I love travelling, but every time I come back home and sit in my sofa I am sure that there is no place like home.
